A guided journal to start your teaching journey
Finishing your yoga teacher training is transformative for many and inspiring for most of us. You’ve invested in yourself, acquired a lot of knowledge and maybe even awakened parts of yourself you didn’t know existed. And yet, once the training ends, many find themselves wondering: Now what? Or better said… now how?
Suddenly, the structure disappears, the guidance fades and the safety net of being a YTTC student is gone. It’s in this in-between space between graduation and actually stepping into teaching that things can start to feel uncertain. And this is exactly where journaling can support you in ways you might not expect. Let’s dive into it.
Many graduates focus on external questions first…
And that can create confusion. I’ve noticed this pattern over and over again through conversations and messages from newly graduated teachers. When they contact me, I’ve noticed that the questions they ask are often outward-looking: How do I find my niche? How do I build my brand? How do I get students? How do I get on a studio’s sub list?
While valid, these questions only become meaningful after you have clarity about yourself. Approaching teaching from a purely external perspective can create pressure, confusion and even paralysis. Make sure that the choices you make are rooted in your own authenticity and understanding of yourself. Not social media trends or studio pleasing. In my experience, sustainable teaching doesn’t mean strategy. It starts from within. This inner path brings everything to the surface: your hopes, your fears and your (self-)doubts. And the truth is, you want to be ready for that.
Self-awareness as a first step.
This is why the first part of the guided journal is focused on self-study as a structured, intentional process that invites you to reflect on your values, your motivations, your energy. Drawing from my own experiences as a yoga teacher and guidance from experts like Virginie Bauman (Grounded Entrepreneurs), the prompts are designed to help you pause, turn inward and develop self-leadership, so that every decision you make about your teaching or eventual business comes from alignment rather than obligation. This reflective phase is where confidence and grounded intuition start to emerge, giving you a solid foundation to move forward without being pulled in every direction by external expectations or comparison.
Then the “how” of teaching naturally follows.
Once that inner foundation is clearer and established, you are equipped to translate that inner clarity into teaching presence, purpose and professional identity. That constitutes the second part of the journal. This is where the “how” begins to unfold; how you envision to show up in your classes, how you structure your teaching, how you translate your knowledge into your teaching practice and how you make intentional choices about your career path. What I want to emphasize here is that the aim is not to become a “perfect” teacher or doing everything “right”. But one that is authentic and true to oneself, guided by a clear understanding of who you are as a teacher.
This journal is your mirror.
This guided journal is your invitation to dive in, reflect, practice and grow as you get ready to bring your gifts to your students and the world. Reflecting, planning, and connecting with yourself in this way is what makes this journal different. It allows you to:
Connect with your values and motivations, so your future decision reflects who you truly are.
Reflect safely on your fears, inspirations and ideas, creating perspective and agency without judgment.
Plan intentionally, exploring your priorities, boundaries and first steps in a way that builds sustainable confidence.
Develop trust in your own voice, knowing that small reflections and consistent practice compound into a grounded, authentic presence in your teaching.
PS: Your first step as a yoga teacher starts here.
After noticing the patterns in questions from new teachers and combining them with my own experience, this guided journal is officially ready! This guided journal is your space to reflect, experiment and step into your teaching journey from the inside out, building your own sense of direction, confidence and trust in your voice.
