Exploring the benefits of family yoga
My six-year-old nephew visited in February. When I invited him to accompany me to a yoga class, he hesitated. Then he asked “but isn’t yoga for girls?" and I was at loss for words. To witness stereotypes taking root at such a young age... Fortunately, his initial reluctance quickly faded away!
First I mentioned to my nephew that yoga is for everyone, genderless. Then I gave him the choice and he still decided to join. Luckily, his initial reluctance quickly disappeared after experiencing his first yoga practice. Witnessing his transformation from skepticism to enthusiasm was a powerful reminder of the positive impact yoga can have. His newfound confidence and pride in sharing what he had observed with his parents inspired me to delve deeper into the world of kids & family yoga. And just a few days later, I was presented with the opportunity to coordinate and participate into my very first Kids & Family Yoga TTC (Teacher Training Course).
What is family yoga?
Kids and family yoga is more than “just another extracurricular activity”: it's an experience. It brings adult(s) and child(ren) together. It invites everyone to move, breathe, and connect in a supportive and non-competitive environment. Each session combines yoga poses, breathing techniques, storytelling, music, and more. It's a chance for children to explore their bodies, emotions and minds. It’s also an opportunity for adults can unwind and connect with their loved ones in a meaningful way. All in all, it fosters mindfulness and relaxation for the whole family.
Benefits for children
Being child-centered and play-led, kids and family yoga offer a wide range of benefits for children. It's like the Swiss Army knife of activities. It's a goldmine for helping children develop important life skills and empowers them to navigate the ups and downs of life. Listing just a few examples below:
Strengthens emotional resilience and regulation
Improves flexibility of the physical body and the mind
Boosts confidence, self-acceptance and self-love
Increases creativity, concentration skills and breath awareness
Helps reducing stress
Benefits for the accompanying adult(s)
Before attending my Kids & Family Yoga Teacher Training Course (YTTC), I used to think that family yoga sessions were primarily for children, with adults simply tagging along. But wow, was I wrong! Turns out, it is just as enriching for us adults, infusing our lives with playfulness and joy, tapping into our inner child again. It's a gentle reminder that fun and learning are timeless, regardless of age! Family yoga also offers a chance to bond with children in a meaningful and supportive way. It's also a great way to practice receiving and giving, switch roles from leading to being led by kids and ultimately, to squeeze in some quality family time amidst the busyness of life.
How to know if it is the right practice for us?
